Prepare
Define objectives, participants, route, conditions, logistics and the environmental questions the program is intended to illuminate.
Train
Prepare staff and drivers and orient participants to field procedures and expectations.
Access
Use appropriate field vehicles and trained drivers to reach relevant remote locations.
Observe
Give participants time to get out, look closely and experience real conditions at human scale.
Educate
Bring technical, environmental, historical and local context into the field.
Discuss
Create structured and informal opportunities—including the Field Table—to exchange perspectives.
Document
Capture observations, questions and useful program information for later reference.
Act
Carry firsthand context into future decisions, collaboration, education or practical solutions.
Expert-Led or Partner-Led Field Work
NBM's role can vary with the purpose of the field activity. In some programs, NBM coordinates both the educational experience and field access. In others, a partner organization brings its own scientists, educators, agency personnel, land managers, researchers or other specialists while NBM provides the field-access and logistical systems needed to reach and support the location.
This may include route planning, transportation, communications, equipment movement, meals, field support and, where necessary, overnight remote operations. Access is the capability; environmental understanding, education, observation, stewardship and productive field work remain the purpose.
